Last night’s game against the Mets was totally winnable. But in the end, they just didn’t execute to pull it out. Now if pitcher Cole Hamels can lay down a perfect bunt, why can’t Eric Bruntlett? There is no excuse for a position player to strike out on a bunt attempt. That one play in the 11th inning really did them in. Had Bruntlett gotten the bunt down and moved the runners up, the double play is taken out and you have men on second and third with one out. All Chase Utley has to do is make contact, which is exactly what he did, and in most cases, the run scores. Instead, Chase’s contact turns into the inning ending double play we saw. And after a horrific performance the day before, this was Bruntlett’s shining moment to redeem himself and still, he comes up empty. Wow. Unbelievable. Incidentally, he went 0-6 for the game.
And you can’t lay this one on poor Tom Gordon either. He never should have had to go 2 innings. He looked GREAT in the first inning he pitched and that is as far as he should have had to go. He is just not built for 2 innings and Charlie knows this. But unfortunately, he also knew that he was running out of pitchers and did not have a lot of choice at that point. And sadly, we have gone and squandered another good outing by Adam Eaton. *Sigh*
Well, this team needs to find a way to win with or without J-Roll! They did it last year without Chase Utley, who was well on his way to being the lead MVP candidate so they damn sure had better be able to do it without Rollins! Like I said, there are no excuses. I am still of the mind that they should have been worked harder in Spring Training. Maybe next year… Speaking of Spring, I have finally finished my photo project from my trip to Clearwater. I threw together some of the more “fun” shots from my trip and uploaded them to Photobucket. Please feel free to take a look…and let’s all try to think happy thoughts about the upcoming home stand… Here’s hoping they can pull it together in time for a productive April! Enjoy the pictures :o)
The Phillies just can’t get rolling without their MVP J-Roll in the line-up. Add 4 errors to the mix and disaster ensues. I’ve been harping on the sloppy defense since the start of the season now and they took it to an all-time low tonight. Wow. Now, Kyle Kendrick did not look sharp by any means, but he sure did not look 7 runs and out by the 3rd inning bad either. In fact, he easily could have escaped the 3rd inning with no damage at all had it not been for the shoddy defense. Hold on to your seats people, I am about to tear Eric “Grizz” Bruntlett a new one…
Is this guy a major league player or what? Seriously? The 2 errors he committed in the 3rd inning were horrendous, inexcusable and really cost the Phillies the game. The one ball he bobbled could have been a double play and out of the inning if fielded cleanly. Instead, he gets nothing except a stunned looked on his face. So sad. In the 5th inning with one out, he fielded a ball that he bobbled badly, it bounced off his chest and luckily for him, landed back in his glove and he was able to make the throw in time to first for the 2nd out of the inning, but wow! Almost a 3rd error for him! UGLY.
So, I am watching this unfold and I can’t help thinking, I did see this guy play in Spring Training and he wasn’t THAT bad. I mean, no J-Roll obviously, but not nearly the disaster I am seeing here. Is he just out of practice? Unprepared? But then…no. No excuse is good enough. He had to have known there was a really good chance he’d play today after Rollins hurt his ankle yesterday. So, you mentally prepare yourself for that possibility. You get a good night’s sleep. You PRACTICE. You PREPARE. I mean, don’t you? Isn’t this what these guys get paid to do? Geez! Sorry, I am just so disgusted with this defense! I mean, if this is how he’s going to play, then please, do go join Grizzly Adams up in the mountains and chase bears or something. I say we call up Jason Donald and let him play! :o)
Ok, so I am being really harsh on the Grizz here. Obviously, not all his fault…I am just soooo frustrated with this team. Even Chase Utley made a bone head error in this game! Then, a horrible throw from Ruiz to third base which was way off line. All the walks by the pitching staff… It just makes you wonder where their heads are at.
The good news for the day is, even after pitching in the last 2 games, Chad Durbin comes in for a third game in a row and pitches 3.2 shut down innings. I’ve been singing his praises since Spring Training and now all I can say is, whoo hoo! Wish we had 5 or 6 more like him. And, as an added bonus, he is adorable :o)
Well, here’s hoping J-Roll is back tomorrow! If not, I shudder to think what may happen…yikes! I vote we try Greg Dobbs at short…or maybe swap him with Chase for the day, because I know he has played 2nd before and Chase has covered short before. After what we saw out of Bruntlett today, can this be much worse? Well, since I don’t get a vote, I guess this is a moot point. Oh well! So much for creative thinking. Maybe Bruntlett got it all out of his system today and will be totally awesome tomorrow! And maybe someone just slipped something in my Kool-Aid…hmmmmm… Well, sweet dreams everyone!
This is how the Phillies looked as they walked off the field after yesterday’s loss to the Reds. And no wonder, as the game ended with the strangest mistake by Jimmy Rollins. What was he thinking? There was only one out, so with the runner coming home to score and win the game, his ONLY play was to throw the ball home to try to save the game. Why then does he even bother throwing to first? Even Howard just stared at him in disbelief and did not even bother attempting to catch the ball. What was the point? Once he threw it to first and not to home, it was game over.
And to end the game like that after wasting a decent performance by Adam Eaton was even more of a shame. I can’t believe I am going to say this but, poor Adam! The guy finally snaps out of whatever funk he has been in still can’t get a win…dazed and confused for sure.
However, it does look like Ryan Howard is getting his groove back. His homer yesterday was recorded at 479 feet…not too shabby. Lidge is back in the pen so I am looking forward to seeing what he can do for us. And Chase Utley is hitting .412 right now and hit his 100th career homerun in Friday’s game. Looks like this year is going to be the Chase Utley show, and I for one am all for it! Here is another amazing photo I took of him in Spring Training as I waved like a crazy person trying to get him to smile for me:
So, we are halfway through the Reds series…hoping we can pull out the next 2 and make it and winning one! Go Phillies!
On Monday they lost it with bad pitching, Wednesday with bad / non-existent offensive and today they almost blew it with 4 errors and a pathetic defensive performance behind Jamie Moyer. But, thanks to a 6th inning 8 hit explosion and then finally, the Jayson Werth walk-off walk to win it in the 10th, the Phils come up with their first win of the season. Whew! Time to exhale…
I’ll tell ya what, maybe next year they need to spend a lot less time in Spring Training looking at prospects and a lot more time leaving their core players in games, getting their reps in and getting them ready for the season. No more of this 3 or 4 innings and send them to the locker room, now lets’ play with the minor leaguers; because obviously, that has hurt them a LOT this April and last April. Clearly, this team is NOT ready to play. They are sloppy, their timing is off and they are not gelling as a team. Ryan Howard dropped at least 3 balls at first base today that, while they may not have been recorded as errors in the book on his end, he should have been able to handle. And if you watch his head when he fields the ball sometimes, he doesn’t even follow the ball into his glove. This is basic stuff. And where is the coaching? Does no one see this? Sorry to pick on Ryan…just one example…believe me, the blame can be spread around to everyone.
So, on the positive side, thank goodness the coming bats are back! Hopefully we can beat up on the Reds, gain some more confidence back and clean up this mess! The talent on this team is too good to be playing defense like this. And let also give a shout out to Chad Durbin, JC Romero, Clay Condrey, Ryan Madson and the new guy Rudy Seanez…well done! I am especially impressed with Mr. Durbin! And he has officially taken the name “Durbin” off my personal “bad words” list (reference to previous JD Durbin, whom we do not miss at all). Luvin’ him!
Will check back in with you all in a few days…till then….go Phillies!
