Whew! SO Happ-Y!

Relief washed over me as I read the news that Gary Sheffield is NOT coming to Philly.  Whew!  Instead, he will be hanging with our rival New York Mets and frankly, that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :O)  For various reasons I mentioned earlier this week, I was not happy about the prospects of the problem-child Sheffield joining our currently relaxed and serene Phillies clubhouse.  Sheffield is at best a distraction and at worst the destroyer of all things peaceful; he should fit right in with the Mets ;O)  You have to wonder though; did the Phillies fake interest in Sheffield just to get the Mets to take him?  Hmmmm…

I am also Happ-Y today because JA Happ has made the 25-man roster as a relief pitcher; the boy pitched his butt off this spring and deserved a spot.  P3024925 JA Happ.jpgJack Taschner, recently acquired from the Giants, will fill the last bullpen spot.  That means there is no room left at the inn for Gary Majewski, who will start the year in the minors.

The Phillies are currently in the 3rd inning against the Rays in pre-season action; score is 1-0, Rays, thanks to a

Pat Burrell RBI single.  The Phillies honored Burrell’s previous 9-year run with the Phillies today by handing out a commemorative Burrell photo to all fans in attendance and they also showed a Burrell tribute video before the start of the game.  I have yet to see the video, but will try to get my hands on it eventually.  Nice move by the Phils all around.  Burrell will also be in attendance on Wednesday for the World Series Ring Ceremony!

There is one game left in this On Deck Series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05pm and then, it is on to the real thing Sunday night!

Friday the 13th?

It was a real Friday the 13th today for pitcher Blaine Neal, who likely pitched his way into the minors forever, losing the Phillies’ 2 run lead in the 9th against the Pirates.  The Phillies lost 6-5 and Neal, who has not seen action in the majors since 2005, likely will not again.  But really, that is the least of the worries for the Phils.

For the second day in a row, the Phillies could not muster any offense until the 6th inning, when it exploded into a 5 run gain.  Prior to that, it was nappy-nap time for the Phils.  Jason Donald and Ryan Howard led the mini-stampede; Donald went 2 for 5 in the game and Howard whacked a 2 run homer in the 6th.  For the most part though, the offense has been quiet; they are obviously saving it up for April.  Chris Coste, however, needs to get the monkey off his back and soon; Coste has not gotten a hit yet in grapefruit league action.

Injury News

Great news at 3rd base!  Pedro Feliz is back in action and said he is ready to go.  So, Opening Day?  No problem!  And no Friday the 13th woes here either.  As for Chase Utley, he began sliding drills today and so far, so good.  He hopes to get in a live game next week sometime.

Burrell Bleeds Red PinstripesPatBurrell thankyou.jpg

And in former-Phillie Pat Burrell news, Burrell took out a full-page ad in both The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily News today to thank the Philadelphia organization and the fans for his 9-year run.  And if you did not love Pat before, you have got to admire him now.  A very classy move; hopefully, once he decides to retire, he will return to Philadelphia and go out as a Phillie, like Mike Lieberthal did last year.  The ad is in the photo to the right; click on it to enlarge and read the whole thing.  Best of luck, Pat!

Vote For Me!

Our friend over at “The Max” blog is holding a Max Madness contest for MLBloggers and today, Phillies Phollowers will take on a Mets blogger, Pick Me Up Some Mets.  I am petitioning for your vote :O)  Please go HERE and VOTE for Phillies Phollowers!

While I have no experience at campaigning, I did think I should point out a few reason why should vote for me.

First, let’s see what I do not have to bring to the table:

 – I do not have a rich, influential Daddy, like some candidates:

bush_sr_jr.jpg

– I do not have young interns to get me some extra press:

lewinski clinton.jpg

– I do not have Joe Biden to yell at people for me and scare them into voting my way:

Biden.jpg

However, I DO have many fine qualities that you look for in any candidate;
Phillie Dales.jpg

– Boys:  Who provided you with the Hooters girls photo?  That’s right…me.

– Girls:  Who gave ya half-naked shots of Pat Burrell, Cole Hamels, Shane Victorino and the Phillie-Dales?  Yes, me again.

– Everyone:  Queen Latifah thinks you should vote for me!

Queen Latifah.jpg

– So does Vince Papale – and remember, he is Invincible!

Vince.jpg

– And then there is my friend Wyland, marine artist, environmentalist and all-around nice guy :O)

Wyland.JPG

– And never forget The Big Man, Ryan Howard:

RHoward.jpg

– Oh, and my blogging is not half-bad either :O)

Thank you for reading this shameless plug for my blog.  Now, please VOTE for me!  You guys rock!

For The Girls…

I hear ya ladies…after I posted a photo of a Hooters girl yesterday at a Spring training game, I received many request from the ladies for some female entertainment.  So, here it is, Phillies-style:

First of all, no Phillie will ever top this photo of former-Phil, Pat Burrell:
Burrell p.jpg

Although, Cole Hamels gave it the college try:

cole_hamels.jpg

And Shane Victorino jumped in on the action during the Phillies Cruise in January:

Shane diving 2.jpg

But the rest of the team seems to be a bit modest.  So, I decided to help them along…meet the Phillie-Dales!  Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins (with a new hair-do), Chad Durbin and Greg Dobbs:

Phillie Dales.jpg

And the scary part is, they probably all look even hotter than that in real life :O)  *Sigh!*

Ok, back to reality!  The Elder, Jamie Moyer started the game today against the Rays; Moyer went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk.  Moyer has looked great all spring.  JA Happ took over in the 6th inning and after the first 2 batters were out, he suddenly gave up a solo home run and a single.  But Happ recovered quickly and got out of the inning with a ground ball.  Happ pitched 3 innings of 1 run ball.  To me, this has been the difference between Happ and Kyle Kendrick or Carlos Carrasco; Happ can make a mistake and move on.  The other two seem emotionally unable to cope.  Chan Ho Park is an experienced veteran who also does not seem shaken easily, so keep an eye on Park as well over these next few weeks.

In the poll I posted yesterday on who will be the Phillies 5th starter, Happ ran away with the contest, getting 100% of the votes.  After Kyle Kendrick’s horrible outing yesterday, this picture is becoming clearer.

The most exciting things that happened offensively for the Phillies in the first 6 innings were Jason Donald getting a walk and Miguel Cairo getting the only hit in those six innings.  After that, Ryan Howard came through with a sac fly with the bases loaded to score the Phillies first run.  The only other offense in the game was a 9th inning home run from Andy Tracy, and the Phils went on to lose 3-2.

WBC Highlights

Team USA lost to Team Venezuela yesterday, but the game really did not mean much; both teams will advance to Round 2 of the Classic.  The other teams who made the cut are Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Japan, Korea and the Netherlands.  Round 2 will begin on Saturday; Rollins and Victorino with Team USA take on JC Romero and Team Puerto Rico at 8pm in Miami.

Phillies Win World Series Reunion

Well, don’t get too excited…it is only Spring Training.  But the Phillies did finally get over the Grapefruit League hump and won their first game today against World Series opponent, the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 12-5.  Ryan Howard also got over his homer hump and slammed his first of 2009 in the 1st inning.  John Mayberry followed with one of his own and 2 batters later, 12-year MLB veteran Miguel Cairo joined the home run parade.  After a 5 run first inning, the Phils looked pretty relaxed.

The rookies tried to make good impressions; Mayberry and Jason Donald both played the entire game with Mayberry going 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, including the home run.  Donald went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI and made a spectacular over-the-wall grab on a foul ball.  He fell clear into the stands, disappearing from view, and still caught the ball.  Here is a photo of Donald being helped up by the fans; also shown:  Cairo sliding into home; Jimmy Rollins tags out a runner attempting to steal; rookie Ozzie Chavez gets a hit:

022809.jpg

Kyle Kendrick pitched the first 2 2/3 innings, allowing 4 hits, including 1 home run.  He pitched fairly well, but did pale in comparison to what we have seen from JA Happ and Carlos Carrasco thus far.  And so that battle continues…  Former Mariner Jake Woods continues to struggle, giving up 2 runs in his one inning of work; rookie Drew Naylor had a one run 2 1/3 innings; Mike Koplove looked great again, pitching a scoreless inning; and our only lefty in the pen so far, Scott Eyre, gave up one run in what looked like a bit of a shaky inning for him.  Eyre, having personal and financial issues right now, really needs to keep his head on straight.  It was reported earlier this week that, due to a bank fraud issue, his assets have been frozen and he is unable to pay bills.  It appears to have affected many people invested in this particular bank and may take a while before the issue is resolved, so let’s hope he can handle the stress.  The advance the Phillies gave him on his salary should help.  Read the article HERE.

The other story of the day was the return of Pat Burrell.  Burrell got a very warm reception from the Phillies fans, who cheered him when he came up to bat, and even before the game during batting practice.  It seems like we are not the only ones who are missing Pat; Greg Dobbs and Ryan Howard had a nice reunion with him before the game:

burrell.jpg

Burrell later told beat writer Todd Zolecki, “The response I got was very special,” Burrell said. “It’s something I won’t forget.”  And some thing we all won’t forget?  The Burrell Butt; oh, how we’ll miss it!

Eaton’s Outta Here

Eaton.jpg

Dumb Luck

The Phillies released Adam Eaton today, still owing him $9.15 million dollars.  No other teams will likely be dumb enough to sign him before he clears waivers, avoiding having to pay his huge, ridiculous contract.  If anyone does pick him up after that, they will only be required to pay the Phillies $400,000.  Ouch.  But what would be more painful, is having to keep Eaton around any longer.

Eaton has got to be the luckiest idiot on the planet; he’s a millionaire, he gets a World Series ring and what did he do for it all?  Nothing.  Perhaps he could teach that trick to a few of us?  It’s the least he can do for the two years of pathetic baseball he pitched for the Phillies fans.  Glad as we are to end the Eaton-era, my question is, who will we pick on now?? :O)

Team USA

A Blue Jays fan asked me at the game on Thursday if Shane Victorino was going to play for Team Hawaii.  No kidding; he was very serious.  I calmly explained to him that Hawaii was part of the United States and that, at that time, only Jimmy Rollins was scheduled to play for Team USA.  I was tempted to see if he had ever heard of the state of Delaware, but was afraid I’d get the “Dela-where?” question.  Canadians are fun.  Anyway, it was announced today that Victorino would play for Team USA after all, replacing Grady Sizemore who is nursing an injury.  Nice of them to include Shane as a real American :O)

Phillies Lose To Reds

The Phils went down to the Reds today, 10-3.  However, the bats are beginning to wake up; Victorino went 2 for 3; Raul Ibanez and Greg Dobbs each went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI apiece; and former LA Dodger, Pablo Ozuna went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.  JC Romero pitched 2 solid innings and Ryan Madson pitched 1 scoreless.  The loss went to rookie Andrew Carpenter who gave up 4 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks to start the game without recording an out.

The Phillies take on the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow at 1:05pm in a World Series reunion.  Pat Burrell has chosen to make the trip to see his old teammates.  Pictures to come!  The game is sold out and should be the highlight of 2009 Spring Training to date.

Tales From The Strange Side…

Pajama Party

The highlight of today’s final Spring Training practice came when the players dressed in front of the crowd.  Each fielder donned a black or blue pair of Slip-N-Slide-type nylon pants and tossed their cleats aside, wandering about in only their red socks.  It looked like they were all wearing footy pajamas and having a sleep-over.  Here is a look featuring Eric Bruntlett pulling up his pants:

The outfits, as it turns out, were part of a base sliding drill.  Interesting as it was to see them sliding around, the socks and baggy pants were the real entertainment.

Utley’s Rehab

Prior to the sliding drill, players worked with Davey Lopes on base running techniques, running from home to 3rd, 1st to 2nd, 1st to 3rd, etc…  Chase Utley participated in the runs at full speed and looked very comfortable.  He is turning corners without hesitation, running through the bases and seems to have gotten most of his flexibility back.  Good news for Phillies fans!

Photo Highlights

Utley and the rest if the group were in high spirits again; here are a few highlights from the day during batting practice and fielding with Utley, Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard:

And a few shots of the pitchers; Chan Ho Park, Chad Durbin and Brett Myers, who appears to be measuring something??  You decide:

A Tall Tale?

Speaking of Utley, I received some information today from a fellow fan about the “World F*@ Champions” debacle after the World Series parade.  Keep in mind that this is third party information and not confirmed; according to fan accounts, Pat Burrell has been sharing his Parade tale while at Rays camp with anyone who cares to listen.  Rumor has it, Pat told fans that prior to the Parade speeches, Utley asked him if he thought he should let the F-Bomb fly or not.  Utley was under the impression that it would not be live TV and tried to confirm that through Burrell.  Burrell claimed ignorance, and the fun ensued.  If you watch the tape back, you will see that right before Utley blurted out the cuss word, it appears that he turned and looked directly at Pat Burrell.  True or not, I cannot be positive; but either way, an interesting story.  Utley is the only one who really knows what happened.  I do still think it was very funny, whether planned or not :O)  Anyway, this one will get filed with the myth of the Chupacabra for now – no one knows for sure if it really existed ;O)
