Cliff Lee had a rough couple of games in the last month, but he bounced back against the Nationals with a 5-0 shut-out win last night. Lee pitched all 9 innings and had only 1 inning of trouble where he battled with the home plate umpire and walked 3 batters to load the bases. But Lee escaped the inning without surrendering a run.
The complete game was just what the doctor ordered for an ailing bullpen. The Phillies used only 2 bullpen arms in the previous 2 games and Monday was a day off, so they have no gotten plenty of rest. All hail Cliff Lee! :O)
The offense did their job as well, getting to the Nationals pitcher early. Jayson Werth set the table, going 3 for 4 in the game and scoring a run. And Jimmy Rollins also had a 2-hit night. But it was Carlos Ruiz who led the pack with a 3-run double in the 2nd inning. He went 2 for 4 in the game and his bat seems to be speeding up. Chooch even tossed a runner out at second base, but not from his usual place behind the plate…he was backing up first base. The ball went past Ryan Howard and Ruiz gunned the runner down going to second. Nice :O)
So the MAGIC NUMBER for the Phillies is now 12. 12 wins to the playoffs with 19 to go! They will try to lower that number against the Nats tonight at 7:05pm.
