What began as a beautiful day for baseball last night, ended with a soggy, windy chill in the air, but a big win for the Phillies. The Brewers sunk under the weight of the Phillies bats. The 11-4 win included a 1 hour and 18 minute rain delay in the 7th inning when the heavens opened up and dumped buckets of water upon us, plus thunder and lightning. But not even Mother Nature could keep the Phillies down on this day.
Jamie Moyer pitched a good game and had trouble only with Ryan Braun, who he has yet to figure out. Braun was 5 for 5 in the game with all 4 RBI’s for the Brewers and 2 home runs off Moyer. Aside from Braun though, Jamie sailed through the game in which he lasted 6 innings giving up those 4 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk. Moyer even scored a run after drawing a walk in the 5th inning.
The offense tore up the Brewers pitching, with everyone except Moyer and Ryan Howard getting a hit, although each drew a walk. Pedro Feliz led the charge with 3 hits, including a solo homer and 3 RBI total on the day. He appears to be fully recovered after the off-season back surgery. As does Chase Utley, after his hip surgery; Utley drew 3 walks in the game, had 1 hit, 1 RBI and scored a run.
In other injury news, Carlos Ruiz is said to be doing well after an oblique strain and hopes to return sometime next week. No need to rush though, as Chris Coste and Lou Marson have done a great job filling in behind the plate. Coste had 2 doubles last night, both of which came with 2 outs in the inning. Ruiz needs to make sure he is healthy before coming back as the oblique is an easy area to re-injury if you are not careful.
Speaking of Marson, I snagged a ball that he hit over the outfield wall during batting practice; not only did he almost tear the cover off it, but the once round ball now looks like an egg. It is actually slightly oblong now. I’ll try to get a picture of it later and add it to the Photo Album from the game. In the meantime, here are a few more shots from the game; Jayson Werth batting, Utley running and Raul Ibanez with a pop-up slide into home:
Joe Blanton will tow the rubber tonight in Game 2 against the Brewers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
