Tonight the Phillies came out on top over the Marlins 8-6, despite some very shaky pitching. Joe Blah!-nton (aka: Blanton) stunk up the joint again today. He cruised through the first inning, but at the start of the second, gave up in order, two walks, a single to load the bases, a sac fly to score one run; then Ryan Howard screws up on a ground ball and tags the runner instead of throwing home and another run scores. In the 3rd inning, Blanton gave up a 2-run homer to Mike Jacobs. He walked 3 batters in 5 innings pitched and all 3 scored. He also gave up a total of 4 earned runs on 5 hits. Is it just me or is this guy starting to look like the worst pick up since Freddie Garcia? I didn’t like the move from day one, and I am liking it even less now. We have JA Happ who could start, but he may eventually have to replace Kyle Kendrick who has been just as awful. Kendrick is sporting a 5.06 ERA and Blanton is at a 4.86 after today. If Kendrick has another bad outing tomorrow, he will likely be pulled from the rotation.
Chad Durbin looked like he was back to normal today, going 2 scoreless innings. Obviously, he is just very comfy in the middle innings and not so much the 8th or 9th. Well, I vote we keep him there. Then I don’t have to say bad words about him, which would really pain me…he is just too cute to criticize J Then there is JC Romero…sometimes he is awesome, and sometimes he gives up 2 run homers like he did tonight in the now dreaded 8th inning. What is it with this bullpen and the 8th inning?? I KNOW someone besides Tom Gordon should be able to handle it! But, no one has yet to be consistent. Ryan Madson got the 2nd out of the 8th, but then gave up a double and was pulled. Scott Eyre, so far not a bad pick-up at all, got the Phillies out of the inning on just one pitch. And Brad Lidge had another tummy turning outing, giving up 2 hits in the 9th, but he came back to strike out the last 2 batters and earn the save.
Jimmy Rollins was totally groovin’ today – he was 3 for 5 with 1 RBI, 2 runs scored and 3 stolen bases. He passed Larry Bowa on the Phillies all-time stolen bases record tonight, moving into 4th place with 289 steals total. I am guessing someone put extra sugar in Jimmy’s Gatorade today, because he was chugging around those bases like he had extra fuel to burn. Ryan Howard also continues his hot streak, with 2 hits tonight for 2 RBI. But the big hit of the game came off the bat of Jayson Werth, who knocked a 3 run-homer in the 7th inning to give the Phillies a 4 run cushion. Good thing too…because they needed it after that 2-run homer Romero gave up in the next inning. Rumor has it that Geoff Jenkins is ready to return, but he may as well continue to warm the bench, the way Werth is hitting.
So, game 2 against the Fish tomorrow at 7:05pm, with the very questionable Kyle Kendrick starting. Let’s hope a few extra days off has been enough to get him back on track. Fingers & toes crossed… J
