Brett Myers totally shut down the Mets through 8 innings tonight. He allowed only 3 hits, walked 2 and did not allow a run to score. In fact, in his last 9 games since he came back up from his trip to AAA, Myers’ ERA is 1.73. Wow! In comparison, Cole Hamels in his last 9 games has pitched at a 2.98 ERA. So I ask you then, who’s the ace of this staff now? It’s looking like a landslide for Myers.
And the other hero of tonight’s win – Greg Dobbs. I LOVE this guy! He went 2 for 3 with a 2 run homer to put the Phillies up 3-0 in the 7th inning, which wound up being the final score. The ball barely squeaked over the right field walk and grazed the glove of Ryan Church who thought he had it; but a home run is a home run and it could not have come at a better time. It gave Myers a little breathing room and really seemed to break the spirit of the trailing Mets. Ryan Howard also gets credit for getting on base. Howard was 0 for 2 in the game, but the 2nd of his 2 walks added a run to Dobbs’ long ball. Howard also had an great day on defense; a rare event indeed. He snagged a hard line drive off the bat of Jose Reyes that was bound to be a triple if it had gone through the infield. He also made a couple of diving grabs to help out Myers.
And Brad Lidge is a saving machine! It was an ugly one today, as he gave up 2 hits, but still wound up with save #34 and not a blemish on his save record. Tomorrow afternoon, if the hurricane doesn’t drown out the game, Jamie Moyer will get the ball at 3:55pm. Moyer does not have the greatest record against the Mets, but I think he will rise to the occasion. He knows what is on the line here. Should be a fun one! Go Phillies!
